Discover Japanese timber framing with this introduction to Japanese timber framing intensive!
This class uses both hand and power tools and teaches you the essential joints needed for the classic "Ori Oki Gumi" style of framing.
This class will run from 9 am to 4 pm on October 2, 3, 4 2026 and will be held in Aiken County, South Carolina.
Exact address will be given after checkout.
This class will teach you the skills necessary to create your own timber frame structure, even if you've never sawn a board in your life.
This three day, hands-on class will teach you Japanese timber framing techniques with both hand tools and power tools.
Tools will be provided - you only need to bring yourself and your favorite pair of work gloves!
You will learn:
- Line rule layout (this is traditional for Japanese woodworking and allows you to work with irregular, rough sawn timbers)
- Sharpening by hand
- The watari ago niju hozu shiguchi joint (a half lap joint with a haunched through tenon)
- Making and using square, drawbore pegs
- Making and using a cross-wedged nuki (what Japanese frames use instead of an angle brace)
- Scribing a post to stone
Plans for the Japanese style pavilion shown in the listing images are included so you can make your own at home!
A hot, home cooked lunch will be provided each day. Classes run Friday-Sunday and will be held from 9 am to 4 pm.
Students will be required to sign a liability waiver when they arrive on site. A photography waiver is optional.
Tickets are transferable but not fully refundable. Students can change their enrollment date or receive a 50% refund if they decide to cancel.
In the unlikely event that the organizers cancel the event, students will be offered their choice of an alternative date or full refund.
